O IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released its new survey of Brazilian federative units that have the highest economic production. A wealth of a state is measured through its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which measures the size of the economy. The recently released data refers to 2021.

GDP is reached by the sum of goods and services produced by each of the 26 states and also the Federal District. However, when comparing the GDP of the regions, it is possible to notice a divergence in the distribution of wealth within the country itself. While the state of São Paulo accounts for almost a third of the wealth of all of Brazil, the state of Roraima represents just 0.2% of the total.

What are the richest states in Brazil?

The ranking according to the state and Federal District GDP published by IBGE was established as follows:

  • 1st – São Paulo: GDP of R$2.7 trillion (30.2% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 2nd – Rio de Janeiro: GDP of R$949.3 billion (10.5% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 3rd – Minas Gerais: GDP of R$857.5 billion (9.5% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 4th – Rio Grande do Sul: GDP of R$581.2 billion (6.5% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 5th – Paraná: GDP of R$549.9 billion (6.1% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 6th – Santa Catarina: GDP of R$428.5 billion (4.8% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 7th – Bahia: GDP of R$352.6 billion (3.9% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 8th – Federal District: GDP of R$286.9 billion (3.2% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 9th – Goiás: GDP of R$269.6 billion (3% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 10th – Pará: GDP of R$262.9 billion (2.9% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 11th – Mato Grosso: GDP of R$233.3 billion (2.6% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 12th – Pernambuco: GDP of R$220.8 billion (2.5% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 13th – Ceará: GDP of R$194.8 billion (2.2% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 14th – Holy Spirit: GDP of R$186.3 billion (2.1% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 15th – Mato Grosso do Sul: GDP of R$142.2 billion (1.6% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 16th – Amazonas: GDP of R$131.5 billion (1.5% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 17th – Maranhão: GDP of R$124.9 billion (1.4% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 18th – Rio Grande do Norte: GDP of R$80.1 billion (0.9% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 19th – Paraíba: GDP of R$77.4 billion (0.9% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 20th – Alagoas: GDP of R$76.2 billion (0.8% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 21st – Piauí: GDP of R$64 billion (0.7% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 22nd – Rondônia: GDP of R$58.1 billion (0.6% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 23rd – Sergipe: GDP of R$51.8 billion (0.6% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 24th – Tocantins: GDP of R$51.7 billion (0.6% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 25th – Acre: GDP of R$21.3 billion (0.2% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 26th – Amapá: GDP of R$20.1 billion (0.2% of all Brazilian economic activity);
  • 27th – Roraima: GDP of R$18.2 billion (0.2% of all Brazilian economic activity).
