
Federal Police (PF) indicted two civil servants and two representatives of BioParque, in Rio de Janeiro, after investigation into 18 giraffes that were illegally imported from the South Africa. The accused will respond for crimes that go against environmental legislation. The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) received, last week, the final report on the investigation, which may be presented against the accused.

The investigation began in January this year after three of the 18 imported giraffes died. The BioParque Zoo made the import request for the animals. Before belonging to the Cataratas Group, the park was managed by the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, but, in 2016, it transferred management to the group.

Because of this situation, theinstitute Brazilian Agency for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) fined the park, later the MPF stated that the import violated international import terms. Bioparque was asked to return the other 15 giraffes, but this never happened.
