Study indicates that the use of Botox can alter the perception of emotions in the brain

In recent decades, the application of Botox on the forehead to prevent the appearance of facial expression lines has become quite frequent. However, this procedure can have adverse effects, as suggested by a new study based on the hypothesis that the application of botox can alter the interpretation of emotions. Understand better below:

The end of it all: scientists confirm date of when sun will explode and…

The study is carried out by a team of researchers at the University of California who released the results in an article in Scientific Reports.

In this case, this team submitted a group of women between 33 and 40 years of age to an experiment that sought to analyze the interpretation of other people's emotions.

For this purpose, this group was presented with pictures of the faces of happy and sad people while undergoing an MRI scan.

More precisely, there were two sessions, the first being before the Botox application and the second two weeks after the application. Then, they analyzed how the interpretation would take place after the procedure.

Thus, the researchers noticed that after the cosmetic procedure, the women began to show signs of changes in the amygdala.

It is noteworthy that this is the point of our brain where emotional processing takes place. Furthermore, the fusiform gyrus, responsible for recognition, also underwent changes after application during the MRI session.

‘Facial Feedback’

Based on these results, the team focused on interpreting these changes as a consequence of the Botox application.

So, it was concluded that the substance disturbed the dynamics of what they present as a “facial feedback”. It's the way we unconsciously contract or relax our face when we see someone's expression.

According to the researchers, this imitation is essential, as our brain is able to interpret the emotions of others based on our reproductions.

Since Botox changes the way our faces are expressed, it is possible to conclude that there is also a change in the way our brain starts to interpret other people's emotions.
