The beginning of the year 2023 registered low temperatures for the city of São Paulo (SP), showing the coldest beginning of the year since 1965. O summer did not prevent the city from having the lowest average presented in recent years, and the people of São Paulo had to take their coats out of the closet.
According to National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), in the first ten days the capital had a maximum average of 23.9°C. In 1965, the average maximum reached 23.8°C.

In addition to the low temperature, the first ten days of the year in SP showed heavy rains. In all, Inmet stipulates that the rainfall index was 79.8 millimeters (mm), being within the average registered in the state, which is 81 millimeters.
The estimate for the weekend is higher temperatures compared to the beginning of the month. However, the weather will still be unstable and will not be firm, and it may rain at any time and register strong thunderstorms.
Inmet reported that the low temperatures are being caused by the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (CASCZ), causing moisture-laden winds that leave the Atlantic and are carried to the Basin Amazon. In a statement, the institute said:
“This system was boosted by coastal waters that are cooler than normal for the time of year and by areas of low pressure, thus helping to promote consecutive days of cloudy and overcast weather, expressive volumes of rain and temperatures below the average."
Low temperatures will occur in the capital and most of the state. The first ten days in the state had a maximum average of 27.9°C in January, observed in 2023 as a minimum average.
In addition, the minimum average, during the same period, was stipulated at 17.6°C, which was also below this average, which was previously 18.8°C.
