This year, the 18th Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad Public Schools (Obmep) broke two impressive records: 55,300 schools signed up to participate, representing almost all municipalities in Brazil (5,563 in all), which means that 18.3 million students will have the chance to participate in the competition.
In the previous edition, 54,488 schools and 18.1 million students participated in the 17th OBMEP. Obmep is recognized as the most important scientific competition in Brazil and is sponsored by the Instituto de Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), aimed at students from the 6th year of elementary school to the 3rd year of teaching average.

The general director of Impa, Marcelo Viana, stated that the Olympics is one of the most extensive and successful educational policies available in the country.
According to Marcelo Viana, the two records broken in the 2023 edition of Obmep are a remarkable proof of the vitality of the Impa initiative, which has been an important agent of transformation in Brazilian education since 2005.
This year's competition will award more medals than ever before, with a total of 650 gold, 1950 silver and 5850 bronze all over the country. The competition also awards public and private schools separately, with a significant increase in the number of awards for private institutions compared to the previous year.
Entries have now closed. The first phase of the competition was scheduled for May 30, consisting of an objective test of 20 questions. Students who move on to the next stage will take the discursive test of the second phase on October 7, which contains six questions.
The tests are prepared according to the student's education level: level 1 (6th and 7th grades), level 2 (8th and 9th grades) and level 3 (high school). The list of qualified for the second phase will be released on August 2nd, while the list of winners will be released on December 20th.
Created by Impa in 2005, the competition has the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) and is funded by the Ministries of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Education (MEC).
