The Justice of Minas Gerais took a historic decision by condemning the company Meta to pay an indemnity of R$ 20 million for collective moral damages, due to a series of data leaks that occurred on WhatsApp, as well as on Messenger and Facebook between the years 2018 and 2019.
This important victory was achieved thanks to the actions brought by the Instituto Defesa Coletiva against the technology giant, commanded by Mark Zuckerberg.

The impact of these leaks is alarming, and therefore, each affected Brazilian may receive individual compensation that can reach R$5,000.
Various personal information was exposed, including passwords, contacts (name, phone, email), date of birth, gender, location, hometown, education and work details, languages spoken, relationship status, photos, stories, likes, comments and conversations.
In the specific case of WhatsApp, it was reported that a malicious spy code would have allowed access content on users' devices, including installed apps, photos, videos, and documents.
The gravity of this invasion of privacy is extremely concerning. Because of the condemnation, the Tilt portal sought Meta to obtain an official position, however, the company informed that it did not receive the formal subpoena.
Therefore, there is still no concrete information on how compensation will be carried out and who will benefit from it.
Although some users are already clamoring for an immediate solution, experts warn that the justice process could take years if the responsible company, Goal, decide to appeal. However, there is a prospect of hope for those affected.
The only certainty that those affected can have until this period is that to receive any amount of compensation, it is necessary to prove that you were active on social networks during the period of leak.
This is where Instituto Defesa Coletiva comes in, an organization that is receiving contacts from Brazilians from all over the country.
Those interested in seeking their rights and qualifying for existing indemnity actions can contact the Institute via email [email protected].
Through this initiative, it is possible, who knows, one day to be compensated for the damage caused by data leakage.
First, click on the Menu (represented by three dashes or your profile picture). Then go to “Settings & Privacy” and select “Your time on Facebook”. There, click on “View Time” and then choose “View Logs”.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and select “View Activity History”. In this section, you can limit the search range to the period between 2018 and 2019.
It is similar. Go to “Settings”, then click on “Account” and choose “Request Account Details”. Finally, go to “Request report”. WhatsApp processes your request and provides a response within three days.
Such measures are especially important in view of the recent leaks of data that occurred between 2018 and 2019.
The Instituto Defesa Coletiva identified five more distinct episodes related to the exposure of user data during this period.
