Several animals use colors to attract mates, including some species of monkeys. Although experts don't always understand why a specific color is attractive to certain species, in the case of the White Uakari (Cacajao calvus) this is quite different.
The White Uacari has no hair on its head. Its face is red and the more striking the face is, the more likely it is to be chosen as a mate. This is because uakaris live in areas prone to malaria. When they develop this disease, their faces become very pale. Having a red face shows that the animal is healthy.

The most distinctive feature of the White Uakari is its red face and hairless head. As we said, the color of your face is a sign of good health – sick animals develop pale faces. They have long, thick fur that can vary between white and red, depending on the subspecies.
Its body length is between 38 and 57 centimeters. Its tail can reach between 14 and 18.5 centimeters and its weight ranges from 3 to 3.5 kg.
It can be found in a very limited rainforest region in South America. Specifically, they have been found in parts of Peru, Brazil and Colombia. Their forests are swampy and wet, so they spend most of their time in trees. The wet and marshy habitat is why malaria is such a problem.
Like many species of monkeys, uakaris are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. Seeds and fruits make up the bulk of their diet. However, they also eat insects, leaves and flowers. Being an omnivore makes it easier to find food in the wet season and in the dry season when there are fewer resources.
The reproduction process of this species is very slow. They give birth to a calf every two years. The mating season is between October and May. The gestation of the puppies has an unknown period.
This species is classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). A vulnerable rating means they are likely to become endangered soon if nothing is done about it. Its population decline results in habitat loss. However, they are also hunted for their meat and the babies are captured and sold as pets.
