Until March of this year, the Education Minister Camilo Santana said that revoking the reform that approved the New High School was not an objective of the Federal Government. However, there was already a broad debate in society about the need to suspend the program, since it brought problems with regard to basic education.
Thus, the announcement of the suspension came only on Tuesday, April 4, by the minister himself after a meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. However, it must be borne in mind that this is not a complete repeal, but rather a temporary suspension of the New Secondary School implementation schedule.
Thus, it was defined that there will be an interruption in the preparation of the project for at least 90 days that began in March, in addition to 30 days for the MEC to publish its conclusions. During this period, the Ministry of Education intends to prepare a public consultation that presents how the people feel in relation to the theme.
The New Secondary Education Law is n.º 13.415/2017 and was responsible for amending the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education. In this case, the great objective of the new organization of Secondary Education would be to extend the minimum time of students in school, as well as to make the curriculum more flexible. At this point in particular, there was a lot of criticism.
This is because it was established that students would choose a training itinerary that should include subjects directed to specific fields of knowledge. Thus, students could decide on their professional destiny. On the other hand, it is noted that there has been a decrease in the school's basic contents to emphasize teaching that is more technical and marketing.
