The course proposal was presented by teacher Kelly Graziani Giacchero Vedana. The reason was the need for students to have in-depth knowledge on the subject, demystifying the approach difficulties faced professionally.
Through the pedagogical plan, students will develop skills that assess potential suicides, risk and protection factors, in addition to the needs and care aimed at both the individual and relatives.
Kelly points out that the usefulness of the discipline goes beyond prevention in cases of greater or lesser potential risk, moving on to post-vention. It is the period in which the patient needs to be assisted after an attempt, and also the families of those who committed suicide.
Work on suicide prevention is not restricted to offering the discipline at the School of Nursing. In addition to the module, the institution intends to offer lectures and courses on the subject aimed at the community in general.
Kelly Graziani reinforces that one of the main issues related to the treatment of the theme refers to emotions, myths and beliefs directed towards suicide. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges is linked to the behavior that may arise in the relationship with the patient.
The very complexity of the subject is challenging, since the health professional must know how to deal with the individuality of the cases. Therefore, the teacher believes in the potential of the new discipline, allowing the acquired knowledge to be expanded.
The intention is to make the students become multipliers, from the sharing of learning with other regions of the country. Thus, there will be an attempt to modify public policies applied to suicide.
Brazil has a national average of 5.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants related to suicide. Between 2011 and 2016, there were 62,804 occurrences. In São Paulo alone, registered cases reached 8,585.
Most situations involved men, corresponding to 79% of cases. Of these, the vast majority were carried out by hanging – 62%. In addition to the actual deaths, there were 48,204 attempts, 69% by women. One third of the victims were recurrent.
