As they are minors, they cannot yet inherit their parents' fortune, which will only happen when Violet, the eldest, turns 18. The trio then goes to live with Count Olaf, a very greedy distant relative, who wants to take the children's fortune for himself. To achieve his goal, he will not measure consequences.
