Exclusive to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, the golden lion tamarin has daytime habits and usually lives in groups of up to 11 individuals.
Victims of deforestation, agricultural expansion and urbanization, the animals were isolated in forest fragments, which hindered development and limited the occurrence of the species in Brazil. In addition, diseases, reproduction problems and illegal hunting make it difficult for new individuals to survive.
Even if vulnerable, the small populations of golden lion tamarins are extremely important for the balance of the forest. Individuals disperse the seeds of the fruits they eat.
