Cities in the Ribeira Valley feel a magnitude 4 tremor

Epicenter was in the municipality of Iguape

The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo confirmed that an earthquake was felt this Friday (16), in the region of Vale do Ribeira, in the south of the state. The tremor occurred around 8:20 am. According to the Seismology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP), the earthquake measured 4.0° on the Richter scale and its epicenter was in the municipality of Iguapé.

“This quake could have been felt in a radius of up to 100km from its epicenter. Shocks between 3.5° and 5.4° are felt, however, they do not usually cause structural damage”, says the USP Seismology Center. The Civil Defense reported that, so far, the Fire Department and Civil Defense have not received any calls for occurrences with victims or structural damage.

The Brazilian Seismographic Network also recorded the tremor and said that low-magnitude tremors are relatively common in Brazil. “In general, these small earthquakes are caused by geological pressures moving small fractures in the Earth's crust”, he informs.

The Civil Defense sent alerts to registered cell phones, recommending that people protect themselves, although there was no risk of potential damage.
