I have told the circumstances of the stranger's arrival in Iping with a certain wealth of detail, so that the curiosity aroused by him can be understood by the reader. But, with the exception of two strange incidents, the circumstances of his stay there until the extraordinary day of the community feast may be summed up. There were some disagreements with Mrs. Hall in matters of domestic discipline, but in any case by the end of April, when they began the first signs of penury, he asserted his wishes with the easy expedient of payments extras. Hall didn't like the guy, and whenever he got the chance he advised them to get rid of him; but he showed this dislike chiefly by ostensibly concealing it, and avoiding his guest as much as he could.
