From the analyzed data, it was possible to determine how many more years a person can gain according to the age at which he/she starts routine change.
For example, they realized that a 40-year-old man who changes his routine can live up to 24 years longer than those who do not adopt the same habits.
“We were really surprised at how much we could gain from adopting one, two, three or all eight of the lifestyle factors,” said Xuan-Mai T. Nguyen, a health sciences specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
First, the scientists screened approximately 719,147 veterans between the ages of 40 and 99. Subsequently, they collected the medical data of these people from 2011 to 2019.
Thus, eating and physical habits, alcohol or drug use and data on mental health were analyzed. All those selected were already participating in the national study of US veterans.
During the study phase, researchers identified that 33,375 veterans died. The final conclusion of the research revealed that people with little physical activity, who consumed tobacco and opioids, had a risk of death between 30% and 45%.
Cases of excessive alcohol consumption, stress and lack of healthy sleep had a 20% risk of death.

An important point of this research is that the indicated habits can be added to the routine at any age. Nguyen states that "the sooner the better, but even if you make just a small change in your 40s, 50s or 60s, it's still beneficial."
These are life-extending habits:
1. Do physical exercises;
2. keep a healthy and balanced diet.
3. Do not consume tobacco;
4. Avoid opioid addiction;
5. Have a proper sleep routine;
6. Reduce stress;
7. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption;
8. Look for good social relationships.
All factors were determined based on data from over 700,000 people. People who changed their routine and adopted healthy habits managed to increase their life expectancy by about 23.7 or 22.6 years, according to the North American research.
So these simple habits ensure quality of life, encouraging the health of body and mind.
