A traveler was staying in the city of Alexandria. In the middle of the night, he realized that his bag of gold coins had been stolen. He went to the police chief, who asked his officers to arrest everyone at the lodge.
The next morning, the delegate interrogated the arrested people. As none took up the crime, he asked his officers to whip them. It was then that a young man introduced himself and said:
– Deputy, let these people go. I was the one who stole this traveler.
Upon saying this, he displayed the bag of gold coins and gave it to the traveler, who kept it in his backpack.
Then, the delegate asked the thief:
– How did you steal the bag?
- I saw this man and his bag of gold coins and followed him to the inn. At night, when he was sleeping soundly, I went into his room, cut his backpack with my knife and grabbed his bag, as I am now.
With that said, the thief cut the traveler's backpack and grabbed the bag. The boss thought the thief was just demonstrating, but before they could understand, the smart thief started to run. The officers followed but failed to catch the thief.
