Microsoft elevates the sense of 'presence' in virtual meetings in Teams; understand how

Recently, the Microsoft rolled out a notable addition to the Teams desktop app, available on both Windows and Mac devices. This new feature, called “spatial audio,” adds an intriguing element to video calls.

When activated, a peculiar effect occurs: the voices of the participants in the call acquire a distinctive character, almost as if each person were occupying a unique position in the auditory space.

This ingenious mechanism also synchronizes the audio location according to the visual disposition of the participants in the call.

In other words, if someone's image is positioned on the left side of the screen, the corresponding audio will also come out of that side.

Microsoft will make Teams even more real

The feature proves especially useful for readily identifying who is speaking during the conversation. Therefore, the update is close to the face-to-face.

The convergence of audio and image provides a more intuitive and natural experience, further enriching the sense of presence and engagement in group calls.

Microsoft points out that this feature is fully compatible with a variety of audio devices, including headphones with USB or standard audio connections.

Additionally, it is compatible with certain wireless headphones as long as they are connected via a USB dongle.

With the arrival of Windows 11, which supports Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE), there is an exciting prospect on the horizon.

To enable spatial audio in Teams, follow these simple steps:

1. Open the “Settings”;
2. Click on “Devices”;
3. Choose the desired audio device, such as a headset or the desktop itself;
4. At the bottom of the page, locate the “Spatial Audio” option;
5. Activate this option and the feature will be automatically applied to calls.
