'Sawsaws' on dogs' lips: what does it mean?

The truth is that, so far, science has not been able to identify what these bumps in the mouth of dogs are specifically.

However, specialists and veterinarians are not without their theories regarding the existence of these structures in the canine anatomy. Check out the top guesses below!

protection for teeth

One of the theories put forward by experts is that these soft folds on the lips of dogs have the function of protecting the animal's own sharp and pointed teeth while the mouth is closed.

These tolerances allow for a precise fit of the teeth, especially the canines, preventing cuts and gum infections that can be caused by friction between teeth and lips.

Hygiene

Another hypothesis raised by some veterinarians is that the bumps on the lips of dogs, known as serrated or wavy lips, may be related to the promotion of oral hygiene.

According to this theory, the shape and rough texture of these folds in the canine lips serve a function similar to that of a toothbrush.

These protrusions could act to remove debris and food residues that get stuck between the teeth, thus preventing the accumulation of plaque, dental disease and bad breath.

pranks

These undulations can make it easier for dogs to grab toys and other objects that they like to carry and play with.

In this case, these structures provided greater protection to the objects, allowing the dogs to hold them more effectively.

This would be particularly useful when the toys are made of hard materials, preventing injuries to the lips while the dog is having fun.
