Son of Luigi and Corina, Italian immigrants, Paulo Menotti Del Picchia was born in the city of São Paulo on March 20, 1892. At the age of five, he went to live inland, in the city of Itapira, which ended up becoming important in the author's history. It was to her that Menotti returned, recently graduated in Law, after studying in Campinas and in the capital.
There he worked as a lawyer and journalist, having directed the newspaper city of itapira and founded The Scream. It was also there that he wrote the poems moisés It is Juca Mulatto, major milestones in his career. […]
In 1920, Menotti returned to São Paulo to take over the direction of the newspaper The Gazette. In the same year, he founded the magazine Paper and Ink, with Oswald de Andrade, and released masks, one of his most famous works. At the São Paulo Mail, under the pseudonym “Hélios”, he began to make heated defenses of modernism.
Already a member of the Grupo dos Cinco, Menotti participated intensely in the organization of the Art Week Moderna, having been responsible for opening the second night of the event, the most tumultuous and important of all.
Throughout his life, Menotti Del Picchia received important honors. In 1943, he became immortal of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL); in 1960, he won the Jabuti Prize for Poetry; in 1982, he was proclaimed the fourth Prince of Brazilian Poets; in 1987, his beloved Itapira presented him with Casa Menotti Del Picchia.
