the wounded pine

Right in the middle of the forest, a lumberjack was sawing an old and tall pine tree. With each stroke of the axe, the giant tree shuddered and cursed against the hard, cold steel that shattered its flank.

It was a very sturdy old tree. Shortly afterwards, the woodcutter inserted a large wedge of wood into the cut to finish splitting the trunk. He gave the wedge a hammer blow, and amidst great rips and splinters, the noble pine toppled over, clattering to the ground. As he fell, he groaned:

– How can I blame the axe, who is not my kind, and not this wicked wedge, who is my own sister?

The attack of a stranger hurts less than that of a loved one.
