Unlike other herons, the white-crowned crane flies at high speed with its neck outstretched. The coloring of its plumage is harmonious..
The name “maria-faceira” (Syrigma sibilatrix) is associated with the harmonious coloring of this heron. The face is light blue. The crown and crest are greyish. The pinkish beak has a blue-violet spot at the tip. The plumage of the throat, neck and underparts is yellowish, while the back is light grey.
While most herons fly with their neck bent in an "S", the white-crested crane flies with its neck stretched out.
Another interesting feature: it is the only Brazilian heron that lives in both wet and dry areas and is present even in caatinga areas.
Couples stay together most of the time and keep in touch in flight with a special call, which is similar to that of toy steamers.
[…]
The maria-faceira spends most of its time on the ground, looking for insects. In flooded areas, it never ventures into deep waters and prefers the shores, rich in vegetation, amphibians, small rodents and fish.
The flights are of low amplitude and high speed.
At the end of the afternoon, the maria-faceira seeks out tall trees, usually on dry ground, to sleep. It usually lives alone or in pairs in fixed territories.
