He is small, has discreet plumage and a large and strong beak that inspired his popular name: beak (Sporophila maximiliani). And it is when he opens his beak and puffs out his chest that he reveals himself to be one of the greatest singers in Brazil. Talented and unfortunately very rare.
It takes its name from the large, strong beak it uses to crack grass seeds.
The weevil has already disappeared from many regions of Brazil. It is estimated that there are only 250 individuals in the wild, while in captivity there are more than 200,000, counting only those legalized by Ibama. Among the main threats are illegal capture for cage breeding and loss of habitat for farming or dams.
This bird likes warm places with bushy vegetation close to water, such as paths.
It has different chants, called dialects. Some of these dialects disappeared from natural areas, being reproduced today only in captivity.
