Reptiles climb up to 5 meters to control body temperature and hunt.
Researchers at the University of Tennessee, in the United States, discovered that certain species of crocodiles have the ability to climb trees, managing to reach heights of up to 5 meters.
The analysis carried out with reptiles from Australia, Africa and North America was recently published in the scientific journal “Herpetology Notes”.
The investigation was conducted by Professor Vladimir Dinets, from the department of psychology at the American university.
He and his colleagues looked at the habits of crocodiles on three continents and found that four species climbed trees that usually had branches close to the water.
Furthermore, smaller reptiles are able to reach higher branches than those with larger bodies.
The researchers suggest that climbing is done with the aim of regulating body temperature out of the water and watching for potential threats, in addition to finding prey.
