The name CLARI is an acronym that stands for “Compliant Legged Articulated Robotic Insect”, which loosely translates as “Robotic Insect with Articulated Legs”.
It has a square shape with a leg on each of the four sides. Each limb operates almost like an independent robot, with its own circuit board and two actuators that move the leg forward, backward and side to side.
Depending on the situation, CLARI can expand to a wider configuration, resembling a crab, or stretch into a more elongated shape, similar to a cockroach, hence the term “insect” in its name.
The robot is 34 millimeters wide when in square shape and can shrink to 21 millimeters when fully stretched.

The machine design is modular and offers the flexibility to combine parts in different ways, enabling the creation of other types of robots, as emphasized by the doctoral student in mechanical engineering, Heiko Kabutz.
Currently, CLARI still relies on wired connections to receive power and commands. However, the vision for the future is that this small robot can move completely autonomously, including through building debris.
In subsequent versions, researchers plan to integrate sensors into CLARI, allowing it to detect and respond to obstacles, further increasing its flexibility and resilience.
