Nísia Floresta is considered the first Brazilian to speak out for the emancipation of women.
Dionísia Gonçalves Pinto was born on October 12, 1810, in the city of Papari/RN. A woman with authentic thoughts and behaviors far beyond her time, she became known under the pseudonym Nísia Floresta Brasileira Augusta.
Poet and writer, Nísia published, at the age of 22, “Women's rights and men's injustice”, in which she deals with the reality of Brazilian women. The work is inspired by the book by Mary Wollstonecraft, known as one of the first feminist manifestos in the world.
For Nísia, education was the first step towards women's emancipation. A pioneer in the fight for literacy among girls and young women, she founded an innovative school in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a milestone in the history of female education in Brazil. She was also one of the first women to publish articles in mass circulation newspapers.
Nísia Floresta already considered that the idea of male superiority had a link with education and the circumstances of life. She also understood that differences between the sexes are social constructions and do not justify inequality.
A campaigner for women's rights, she did not limit her actions to this issue. She became involved in defending the Indians and also in discussions about slavery. She supported the abolitionist and republican movement.
She died in Rouen, France, on April 24, 1885.
