The bird has a much wider distribution in tropical seas in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific and is the smallest among the boobies. It feeds on flying fish and tends to fish further from land.
According to biologist Fábio Olmos, the bird builds its nests in trees. In the Brazilian Atlantic, the species nests only in Fernando de Noronha (PE). However, it previously also occurred on Trindade Island (RJ), but became extinct due to the destruction of the native forest by human settlers and their goats.
An interesting fact about the red-footed booby is that the bird is polymorphic, that is, there are individuals with different colors. There are white, brown and intermediate morphs, and they can have a white or black tail.
According to Fábio, in Fernando de Noronha (PE), rats, cats and tegus are a serious problem, as the increasing occupation of the island and the loss of larger trees compromise the populations of red-footed boobies and other species that nest in the local.
