Species considered rare has exuberant plumage
What is the most beautiful bird in Brazil? It is difficult to measure the level of beauty given so much diversity, color and perfection that we find in many species that occur in our country. But without a doubt, crejoá would be at the top of this ranking. With its striking colors, this 20-centimeter bird steals the show with a simple appearance.
In addition to the bright tones, the exuberance of the crejoá's plumage highlights the blue collar amidst the nightingale's chest. But this striking and characteristic costume is exclusive to adult males of the species. Females are more discreet and wear brown, scaly plumage.
The species belongs to the Cotingidae family, considered one of the most famous South American families, due to the beauty of its feathers.
A silent species, it can rarely be observed vocalizing. It is found mainly in the south of Bahia, it has already been extinct in Rio de Janeiro and it is believed that there are still a few individuals in the extreme east of Minas Gerais and in the Rio Doce State Park.
The species' diet consists mainly of fruits. During the reproduction period, the crejoá builds a nest in the treetops with twigs in the shape of a small basket. The female is responsible for building the nest and incubating the young.
An interesting fact is that all of the crejoá's closest relatives live in the Amazon. This fact reveals the ancient connection that existed between the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest in wetter climatic periods.
