Why does rain fall in the form of drops?

Water vapor passes into liquid form only when the relative humidity of the air reaches close to 100%. This occurs preferentially on so-called condensation nuclei – very small materials that have an affinity for water. The droplets that form on these particles grow until they reach such a weight that they begin to fall, generating rain. All this happens little by little and not all at once: that's why the rain falls in drops. The smaller drops, which do not have enough weight to overcome air and wind resistance, remain in suspension and will only fall when they manage to join others.
