Norman Thayer Jr., a retired teacher who is about to turn 80, goes with Ethel Thayer, his wife, to their summer home, which is located on the banks of a paradisiacal corner in Nova England. Soon after, the couple's daughter Chelsea Thayer Wayne arrives in the company of Bill Ray, her future husband, and of his son, Billy Ray, who hope the elderly couple will look after the teenager while they travel to Europe. Initially, the elderly man is uncomfortable with the young man's presence, but soon the boy becomes the son he never had and the two end up getting involved in an accident.
