According to information from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), a construction that would happen in Fortaleza, Ceará, could harm the functioning of the Internet throughout the Brazilian territory.
This is because there is a project to install a desalination plant in Praia do Futuro. The work is led by the Ceará Water and Sewage Company (Cagece), and the state government is behind it.

The idea, with this, is to convert seawater into drinking water. However, telephone companies fear that the installation of this plant could result in the disruption of submarine cables that provide internet throughout the country.
Currently, the city of Fortaleza is the only one that receives fiber optic cables directly from Europe and which are capable of providing a fast internet connection in Brazil.
From there, the cables go to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The city of Ceará is the choice because of its proximity to the European continent – around 6 thousand km away.
Because of this, these cables are responsible for around 99% of internet and data traffic in the country. “Ceará is what guarantees the interconnection of our Brazil with the rest of the world”, says Juscelino Filho, Minister of Communications.
Due to statements that, if the Cagece plant is installed, the cables could break, the project was stopped. This will delay the completion and delivery of the power plant in at least six months.
However, now, those responsible for the project guarantee that the distance between the plant structure and the cables has increased: from 40 meters to 500 meters. The change will cost around R$35 million.
With the changes, Anatel's positioning is expected for the possible continuation of the project. In total, Cagece's investment reaches R$3.2 billion, and is expected to start in 2025.
