In a new proposal for traffic, North Carolina State University, in the United States, is studying the inclusion of another color on the traffic lights - the White.
It will integrate vehicles autonomous, which move without human intervention. The 4th color will communicate between these cars and the traffic light, as they approach an intersection.

The traffic light will coordinate movements and can make the flow of traffic faster and simpler.
The white light, therefore, will indicate to humans that they should do whatever the vehicle in front of them does: stop, follow or pass an intersection.

The idea is that, by following the electric car guidelines, there will be greater savings on gasoline and improved traffic conditions.
White light would also be a good idea for human drivers to understand what is happening at intersections.
But the most important question is: what if there are no self-driving cars at intersections? At this time, the other three traditional traffic light colors would continue to be valid and conventional norms would continue.
The research is happening in the United States and, still, it is nothing more than a concept. The entire feasibility of implementing this traffic light will still go through a testing and simulation phase.
From this, it will be possible to understand whether, with autonomous and normal cars, it will really work.
Furthermore, even with all the tests and simulations, there also needs to be regulation and legislation so that traditional traffic lights are changed.
Even if this comes into effect, it will not be in the near future, and will primarily occur in the United States. There is no indication that this type of technology will arrive in Brazil anytime soon.
