They may howl as a way to bring the group together, to mark their territory and even to show who is in charge. Bringing different members of the pack together, for example, is important because wolves tend to chase their prey for hours to tire them out and only then attack them together. Likewise, defense against intruders will be more efficient if all wolves are gathered together. A juvenile or cub that strays too far from adults, for example, can easily become prey. Hence the importance of howling to keep everyone together.
