In an archaeological discovery worthy of a tale of beauty and mystery, archaeologists in Türkiye have unearthed a treasure trove of cosmetics and jewelry dating back 2,000 years in the city of Aizanoi, in Kütahya Province.
What makes this discovery even more impressive is the practically perfect state of conservation of these artifacts from ancient Rome, found nearby the majestic Temple of Zeus, one of the main local tourist attractions.

The team of scholars found a palette with ten different shades of makeup pigments, predominantly in shades of red and pink, as well as a variety of jewelry, perfume bottles and other cosmetics from Antique.
Professor Gökhan Coşkun, responsible for the excavations at Dumlupinar University, compared Roman makeup to modern blushes and shadows, highlighting the timelessness of the search for beauty.

Archaeologists speculate that these products were sold in a cosmetics store at the time.
“During the excavations, we found a large number of perfume bottles, as well as jewelry. There are several items such as hairpins and necklaces worn by women,” Professor Coşkun reported in an interview with Turkish state news agency Anadolu Ajansı.
He added that makeup was often stored in oyster shells, revealing an intriguing detail of beauty habits of the period.
Such discoveries are invaluable for understanding the history and culture of the region, offering vivid evidence of the aesthetic preferences of the ancient Romans.
