The largest lawsuit, in terms of number of people, was filed in the courts of California, where 33 states joined together in a class action lawsuit against Meta's policies.
This new legal battle appears to be a continuation of the allegations made by Frances Haugen, the company's former product manager, who exposed discussed practices carried out by the company in 2021.
Around the same time, it came to light that Meta, then under the name Facebook Inc., transferred research that confirmed the risks of its social networks for teenagers' mental health.
In the lawsuit filed now, the authors argued that the company changed the psychological and social reality of an entire generation of young Americans.
Furthermore, they accuse Meta of promoting related behaviors by introducing features such as the “Like” button and by not have effectively removed contraband content related to issues such as cyberbullying and riots food.
Part of these accusations was confirmed by Meta itself in its research into the risks of Instagram for the mental health of young people.
For example, in one of the aspects evaluated with young girls, 32% of them responded that using social media made them feel worse about their appearance.
At the same time, among the 1,200 interviewed, almost 70% stated that they consider mental health something simultaneous to “being happy”.
