The initiative has already reintroduced 500 endangered birds.
The Project for the Reintroduction of Wild Birds Threatened with Extinction – Projeto Mutum celebrated, on the 13th of September, 33 years of the partnership between Cenibra and CRAX – Society for Research on Fauna Management and Reproduction Wild.
In the commemorative ceremony held over the Lost Bridge, in the Rio Doce State Park, they were released 10 pairs of southeastern curassow, a species endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome, practically extinct due to hunters.
In addition to the curassow, other threatened birds are part of the project. The superintendent of the Minas Gerais Environmental Defense Association (Amda), Dalce Ricas, and the entity's project coordinator, Francisco Mourão Vasconcelos, represented the entity at the ceremony.
“We were already aware of the project and praised the action taken by Cenibra and Crax to benefit the fauna and flora of the Atlantic Forest. It is an example that should be followed by other companies”, highlighted Dalce.
According to Cenibra, 500 birds have already been reintroduced into their habitat and more than 340 chicks born in the wild have already been recorded during field monitoring. It is estimated that the number of puppies is significantly higher, due to the fact that the forests of the RPPN Fazenda Macedônia, where where the project is located, are connected to other areas preserved by the company, which allows the dispersion of birds.
In a note, the company notes that the Mutum Project also contributes to the conservation of forest fragments Atlantic native to the region, as birds play an important role in dispersing tree seeds in the biome.
Takashi Nakajima, executive president of Cenibra, said that the Crax Project is considered a model by companies that, like it, make up Oji Holdings, a Japanese company.
