3 reasons why your dog eats grass, according to veterinarians

If you have one puppy, you've probably already witnessed the scene: the four-legged friend grabbing a handful of gram. While you wonder if he's trying to add a salad to the menu, this common canine behavior arouses curiosity and, sometimes, concern in owners. So why do dogs do this?

The answer may be more related to our pets' wild ancestors than to a simple preference for vegetables. Thus, science has provided several explanations that help us better understand why dogs have this peculiar habit.

Dog eats grass out of ancestral instinct

Modern dogs descended from wolves, and there is evidence that these ancestors regularly consumed plants. In other words, this behavior was a way to obtain essential nutrients that were not present in the meat that made up the majority of their diet. Furthermore, the grass helps with digestion and can function as a natural dewormer, helping to eliminate intestinal parasites.

Canine self-medication

Dogs can use grass as a form of self-medication. In other words, when they feel indigestible or have gas, for example, the act of eating grass can induce vomiting, helping them feel better. Therefore, the fibrous nature of grass can stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, promoting bowel movement and the expulsion of anything that is causing discomfort.

Reasons why dogs eat grass: variety in the diet

Despite being carnivores, dogs are opportunistic animals when it comes to food. They enjoy a varied diet and often grass can be a flavor change they seek. So eating grass doesn't mean their diet is deficient, but it could be a sign that they could benefit from a more varied diet.

Compulsive behavior

In some cases, eating grass can be a compulsive behavior. In this way, it could be a sign of boredom or anxiety, especially if the dog spends a lot of time alone or does not have enough space to expend energy. Providing interactive toys or rides can help reduce this type of behavior.

Of course, if grass consumption is excessive or accompanied by frequent vomiting, it is important to consult a veterinarian. Taking good care of your friend means paying attention to his habits, including the times when he decides to have a green meal.
