O Federal government extended to January 11, 2024 the deadline for the 26 states and the Federal District to begin issuing the new National Identity Card (CIN). The date previously defined for states to adapt was last Monday, November 6th.

The change in the deadline occurred due to a request from the states. According to information released by the Ministry of Management and Innovation, more than 2 million new identities have been issued to date. In total, 11 states and the Federal District are already issuing the CIN.
With the new identity card, the CPF becomes the only identification number for citizens in public service databases. Currently, each citizen can have up to 27 different IDs, one different for each federation unit. This increases the risk of scams and fraud. The change aims to increase document security and facilitate access to information for Brazilians.

Yes, the new National Identity Card is mandatory. However, the old identity card has not lost its validity, but the validity of the old models only lasts until February 28, 2032. The document, which began to be implemented in 2022, will now be issued with two new changes in relation to the standards defined during Jair Bolsonaro's government.
This way, there will be a unification of the “name” field, without the distinction between the social name and the civil registry name. Furthermore, there will also be the extinction of the “sex” field. In the case of LGBTQIA+ people who already have a new identity card and want to exchange it for the new model with the defined changes, they can request a second copy of the document.
