It is also somewhat widespread that the key in the lock can make it difficult for thieves to force their way in.
This is a statement by Samuel Prieto, from the Higher Institute of Public Security in Spain (via Mundo Deportivo). In an interview with the YouTube channel ‘El Panda Inversor’, he said, clearly, that leaving the key in the lock does not provide any additional security.
He explained that some types of cylinders in the lock, which are the most important part of the item, have double entry. In other words, they can be closed inside and outside. Therefore, it doesn't matter if the key is on one side or not.
In fact, Prieto said that this could even give the resident a headache. If you go out and leave your key in the lock and take a copy with you, when you try to get in it could jam your lock.
In some European countries, the standard is for locks to have double cylinders. The single clutch cylinder, which does not allow the lock to be turned when there is a key on the other hand, it is prohibited, according to Samuel Prieto.
According to him, in fact, in the last cylinder manufacturing standard there was talk of banning them in Spain as well. There is no information about a similar law in Brazil.
