Regarding the alert level, the category rose to great danger in the Federal District, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Rondônia and São Paulo. According to the published forecast, temperatures could be 5 °C above the historical average for November.

In Rio de Janeiro, temperatures were above 30 °C this Sunday morning (12), exceeding 47 °C in thermal sensation. Historic heat was also recorded in São Paulo during the weekend, surpassing the temperatures recorded in November in the last 19 years.

How long will the heat wave continue?

According to Inmet's forecast, the new heat wave is expected to last until this Wednesday (15). However, the tendency is for the heat to continue until the end of the year, given climate change and the influence of El Niño.

As explained by Andrea Ramos, meteorologist at Inmet, “the World Meteorological Organization has already identified that we are experiencing four months with above-average temperatures and a tendency for us to end the year as the hottest ever recorded since the beginning of measurements”.

In addition to the new heat wave, there is also an alert for the low humidity. According to the limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO), humidity levels below 12% are already considered emergency. Several places in the country are already below 15%, increasing the alert for Brazilians.

At the weekend, some cities recorded record temperatures, such as the maximum of 42.3 °C recorded in Porto Murtinho (MS) and Aragarças (GO). The hottest city in the country, Cuiabá (MT), recorded 41.3 °C.
