The Deni are among the indigenous groups in the region of the Juruá and Purus rivers that, in the 1940s, suffered the impacts of the second rubber cycle, which attracted thousands of migrants.
With these came diseases, violent territorial disputes and exploitation of indigenous labor. Since then, the Deni have had to wait decades to have their territorial rights secured, and it is necessary to start a campaign for self-demarcation of land, with support from NGOs, so that they could achieve official demarcation, which was completed in August of 2003.
However, they still face problems arising from recurrent invasions of clandestine activities such as fishing and logging.
