On the eve of a new year, comments about long holidays are not the most favorable for Brazilians. Even so, you need to plan ahead!
In 2024, we will have nine national holidays, but only three of them will offer the chance for a weekend prolonged, falling close to Monday or Friday.

The holidays of the Universal Fraternization (January 1st), the Passion of Christ (March 29th) and the Proclamation of the Republic (November 15) are chosen to provide these prolonged moments of rest.
These will be the days that Brazilians will need to take advantage of to guarantee rest during work, as the expectation of extended time off is not the best.
Unlike 2023, which had seven extended holidays, this leap year, with 366 days, will offer fewer opportunities for short-term travel, as four holidays will fall on the weekend.
National holidays gain a broader perspective when optional points are included, adding up to a total of six special benefits.
Among these, only two provide a longer interval, forming a period of four days. Carnival, on February 13th (Tuesday), and Corpus Christi, on May 30th (Thursday), are the times when this longer “amendment” can be expected.
Although the official calendar with the dates of national holidays and optional points for 2024 has not yet been released by the federal government, we can compare the dates with the 2023 calendar.
It is important to note that municipalities and states have the autonomy to establish, in local legislation, that national optional points, such as Carnival or Corpus Christi, are officially recognized as public holidays locations.
This prerogative adds a layer of complexity to the calendar, as, for federal public servants, Carnival and Corpus Christi are already considered optional points.
Therefore, those who have the right to rest during these periods will be able to enjoy two additional long holidays in 2024.
