The species draws attention due to its name. It is a representative of the Rallidae family, the same as the frogs, saracuras and carquejas. And, like most of its relatives, it is skittish and difficult to observe in the natural environment. This is because it is a ground-dwelling bird and stays buried in the vegetation. In addition to this issue, a factor that does not make observation easier is that the maxalalagá is a tiny bird, considered the same size as a sparrow.
In Brazil, there are photographic and sound records of the bird's occurrence in different regions of the country. However, the state with the highest rate of clicks and encounters with this animal is Minas Gerais. And among the cities where individuals of this species were observed, one in particular stands out: Pompéu (MG).
