José Saramago was born in 1922, to a peasant family in the province of Ribatejo, in Portugal. Due to economic difficulties, he was forced to interrupt his secondary studies, and from then on he worked various professional activities: mechanical locksmith, draftsman, civil servant, editor, journalist, among others.
His first book was published in 1947. From 1976 onwards, he began to live exclusively from literature, first as a translator, then as an author. Novelist, playwright and poet, in 1998, he became the first Portuguese-language author to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Saramago passed away in Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, in 2010. The José Saramago Foundation maintains a website about the author.
