Plant has large and heavy fruits
Originally from the Amazon, the monkey apricot draws attention for its unmistakable beauty. During the flowering period, more common in the last months of the year, the flowers take over the entire trunk of the tree, appearing from the ground to the upper branches. In addition to the intense perfume, they have unique beauty: each flower has six red petals, a lilac core, and white, yellow and/or pink stamens.
The tree reaches 30 meters in height and its trunk measures up to 50 centimeters in diameter. In addition to the flowering trunk, the species has round fruits, similar to a futsal ball, which weigh between 300 grams and three kilos.
With brown skin and cream pulp, the fruits appear shortly after the flowering season. When exposed to air, its internal part takes on a blue-green color, giving off an unpleasant odor. On average, fruit maturation lasts around three to four months.
The monkey apricot is distributed throughout the Amazon region, with its main habitat being the floodable banks of rivers, floodplains and igapós. Despite being native to marshy soils, the tree also grows in dry land, mainly in the central and southern regions of Brazil. Outside the country, it can be found from Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela to the Guianas.
