The date, celebrated every year on August 28, is a tribute to English archaeologist William John Thoms. He studied the traditions and legends of England and was the first to use the term “folklore”.
William's study was published in a magazine in the English capital London on 22 August 1846. More than a hundred years later, Folklore Day was made official in Brazil.
The word means “tradition of the people” and is composed of two terms in English: folk (people) and lore (tradition).
