The Quilombola community Castainho is located six kilometers from the center of the city of Garanhuns, in the agreste region of the state of Pernambuco. The quilombola communities Timbó, Estivas, Tigre, among others, are also located in this municipality. In Castainho, 206 quilombola families live.
The history of Castainho is related to that of the Quilombo de Palmares. Symbol of resistance and organization of runaway slaves during the empire, Palmares was the great quilombola stronghold of the region located in the south of the state of Pernambuco and north of the state of Alagoas. Residents of Castainho identify the origin of the community with the destruction of the Palmares quilombo. Castainho was founded by a group of blacks who managed to flee the war that destroyed Palmares.


The community survives mainly on the cultivation of cassava, but also plants corn, beans and vegetables. Cassava is used in the production of flour, pasta, beiju and gum, products that are sold in the city of Garanhuns. […]
