Everything, but everything that exists, is formed by atoms. This includes this magazine, your pet, the cookie you eat for lunch, the stars, the insects, the flowers, your body… Because 100 years ago, science discovered that the atom is a great empty. Or rather: that practically all the mass of this tiny portion of matter is concentrated in a tiny and very hard central core: the atomic nucleus.
The author of the discovery was the New Zealander Ernest Rutherford, considered one of the greatest scientists of all time. He not only revolutionized physics, but all the natural sciences. We can say that Rutherford, whose poor childhood was spent on a farm, discovered the 'heart' of the atoms, _____ where it was later possible to extract nuclear energy, so important to the well-being of the humanity.
