Hearing noise at the front door and uncle Severino's familiar footsteps, Luciana handed Maria Júlia the rag dolls, she got up wildly, left the corridor, entered the room, stopped indecisively, waiting for the called. Nobody noticed her. Mom and Dad, on the sofa, soaked up the slow, sniffling words of Uncle Severino, a handsome man, lord of the armchair. Luciana guesses the consideration: the owners of the house listened, nodded and approved: in the kitchen, muttering, teasing herself, the maid was preparing coffee. Sometimes in the family a phrase that had the weight of the law was repeated.
— It was Uncle Severino who said it.
— Ah!
And nothing else was added.
Luciana wanted to get closer to the big people, but she remembered what had happened to her the day before. He plunged into a long meditation. She had walked with my mother through the city, walked several streets, satisfied.
In an ugly and slippery place, where rainwater pooled, he had resisted, held back, demanding that cobblestones be placed there. Grasped by one arm, summoned to continue the walk, she had had a fit of despair, a convulsive cry, and had fallen to the ground, sat in the mud, kicking and screaming. At home, before taking off his dirty shirt, Mom had given him three vigorous spankings. Because? Luciana had spent the day trying to reconcile with the powerful being who had hurt her buttocks. Now, in the presence of the visitor, this strong creature announced no danger.
