The international diffusion of the Portuguese language started in the 15th century, with the maritime expansion of the Portuguese empire, which has already extended from South America to Southeast Asia, passing through Africa and the India. Currently, Portuguese is the official language in nine countries, as well as in the Chinese territory of Macau.
