Our cities need trees, which, in addition to offering us their shade, bring us countless benefits. More trees contribute to an improvement in the urban microclimate, helping to reduce temperature and air pollution. They increase soil permeability and retain rainwater, preventing landslides, erosion and flooding. They act as a barrier against wind, noise and light. From the point of view of regional biodiversity, they are still fundamental for the environmental balance, serving as housing and food for small species, birds, insects and microorganisms. In addition, of course, to the psychological well-being of traveling through a beautiful wooded area.
With so many advantages, we can say that if you want to transform your environment, whether in the countryside or in the city, in a place with better quality of life, one option is to start by planting a tree. But, of course, you need to follow some tips to ensure the success of the endeavor.
The first step is to choose where you want to plant the tree. In the city, this is a process that requires prior knowledge of the characteristics of the species so that it does not damage to the plant or public equipment, such as electrical wiring and breakage of the sidewalk by roots, among others. Basically, species must allow sunlight, coexist with lighting networks, keep adequate distance from the houses and be small, with shallow roots, such as the cherry tree. On the other hand, open areas without vegetation can receive trees of different sizes, growth speed and profile.
Research and prioritize native tree species in your region – environmental agencies and seedling nurseries are usually good sources for this information. Try to choose a species that is viable to care for and find out about aspects such as frequency of watering and the need for pruning.
It is also essential to verify the need for authorization to plant in the chosen location. The best option is to seek guidance from the city hall, environment department or other agency responsible for the issue in your municipality.
[…] The message remains: planting and caring for _______ a tree is another great way to exercise social and environmental citizenship and contribute _______ to a more sustainable environment.
