Who wanders among the books of some old abandoned library, at the invitation of the heir who still doesn't know what to do with it (sell it by the kilo? call an expert to assess it? put it up for auction?), may feel trapped in a web of melancholy. Those books were gathered according to the taste or need of an old and avid reader, now extinct, who has not asked which book he would like to take to his desert island in space heavenly. Many of these books are perfectly dead, like their former owner: they no longer say anything to anyone, if they ever said anything important. Thus, dozens of spines resemble tombs of useless shapes and ideas, in a sad succession of dead letters. However…
However, it may happen that the eyes will shine when they see a famous title – novel, scientific treatise, biography, philosophical essay, anthropological research, all of still recognized value, proving that there are words and ideas that update and remain, interesting to successive generations. It seems that Darwin's law also applies to books: the strongest remain.
But the biggest impact comes when, suddenly, some copies of a magazine, very popular a hundred years ago, appear in a corner of the shelf. Leafing through them is, almost literally, entering the tunnel of time and savoring the news of the week, or the month that has passed, a century too late. That daily life, reported with details, illustrations and all kinds of picturesque, emerges as a laugh that got stuck in the throat of the hourglass. But we don't laugh. We look at the photos, at the faces of young ladies, matrons or old men in frock coats, and a classic verse comes to mind: where are those who existed in this world before us?
No one should enter an old library unprepared.
